Paraguay GMO Approval
Paraguay has approved in October 2004 four soybean varieties, containing the Monsanto’s Roundup Ready genes, for planting and marketing.
Paraguay produces about 2 percent of the global soybean production. Paraguay joins about other 15 countries that have already approved planting of Roundup Ready soybeans. Not all farmers in these countries comply with royalty collection regime because of the absence of collecting systems. In Argentina, growers can legally replant GMO soybeans, from their own harvest, without paying royalties. Paraguay’s approval will help to close the Latin America’s biotechnology black market.
Monsanto will fund research and development projects, agreed by government and agriculture representatives. The research will focus on crop research and germplasm improvement.
